# Policies and commands

Answers the question: How do you set rules and send a command?

## Policies

A policy is a set of work-profile restrictions. One policy is assigned to a group or to a single device.

A device is under its own policy, else its group's, else the `Default` policy the server creates on first start. The "– no own policy –" item on the device page takes the own policy away.

## Groups

A group sets a policy and a geofence for many devices at once and is a target for alert rules. In the Groups section a group has a policy, zones and a geofence switch. They apply to members without their own. A device's own policy and geofence take precedence. A device is moved into a group on its page. The geofence is described on the [Geofence](https://docs.wyrd.link/en/features/geofence/) page.

## Commands

Commands are sent from the device page, the Commands tab. The same tab assigns a policy and a group, and installs an application.

On the right are the recent commands: what was sent, when, and how it ended. A command that did not go through carries the handset's answer beside it. A command sent to an offline device waits in its queue and goes out on the next connection.
