# Location

Answers the question: Why does the phone not report its position?

## Who turns it on

The phone's owner turns position reporting on, in the app on the handset.

The switch turns on only when the phone has location, location for the work profile and network location on, and Wyrd is allowed precise location "all the time" and unrestricted background running. The app lists what is missing.

While reporting is on, the phone's location settings are locked: location cannot be switched off and the permission cannot be revoked. The same switch lifts the lock. If a condition goes away, reporting switches itself off and the phone says so.

On the device page the "Location sharing" row shows whether reporting is on on the phone.

## Permissions

The app asks for two location permissions in a row, and the second one decides.

The first is the ordinary Android dialog. Answering "Only while using the app" gives no position in the background.

The second is "Allow all the time". Android offers it only on the app's permission page, which the app opens itself. If the moment is missed: **Settings → Location → App location permissions → Wyrd**.

Both are shown on the "Device status" screen. A row reading DENIED is tappable and asks again.

## Where the position comes from

Positions come from two sources: satellite and network. Satellite works under open sky and says nothing indoors. Network location works anywhere, and GrapheneOS ships with it switched off. For it the phone sends the chosen provider the identifiers of nearby Wi-Fi networks and cell towers.

It is turned on in the personal profile:

**Settings → Location → Location services → the Personal tab → Network location → choose a provider.**

The Private and Work tabs are empty: the work profile uses what the personal profile has on.

What the handset has right now is shown in the "Position sources" row on the same "Device status" screen.

## When there is no position

When there is no position, the reason stands next to the command: Devices → the handset → the Commands tab → "Recent commands".

## How positions are sent

While position reporting is on, the handset takes a fix every quarter of an hour and sends it with the next telemetry. The console shows two times: when it was taken and when it arrived.

A command from the console asks for a fresh fix. If none can be had, the phone returns the last stored one, and the "Taken" time shows its age.

The switch turned off stops the sampling and erases the last fix stored on the phone.

The point is shown on a map. Where the Wyrd server gets the map from is on the [What the server needs](https://docs.wyrd.link/en/server/requirements/) page.
