# A lost device

Answers the question: What do you do in the first minutes after a phone goes missing?

## The order of things

1. Find the device in the console by its name.
2. Lock it.
3. If it is not expected back, wipe the work profile.

The personal half of the phone stays: the employee's photographs, messages, accounts and applications.

Commands are queued and reach the phone as soon as it connects.

Once the work profile is removed – by the command, the geofence or the inactivity timer – the device is marked "profile removed". Such a record takes no licensed slot.

An enrolled device leaves the list after a wipe command, or after the phone has removed its work profile by itself. There is no need to wait for the command to arrive. The phone gets the wipe when it next connects, even once its record is gone.

## Wiping the whole phone

The application on the handset carries a switch, "Reset the phone with the profile". With it on, the same command resets the whole phone rather than the work profile alone.

- Off by default.
- Only the phone's owner turns it on or off, on the handset itself.
- It is not shown in the console.
- The same switch governs every removal of the work profile: on the inactivity timer, by a [geofence](https://docs.wyrd.link/en/features/geofence/) and after a SaaS license ends.

The whole phone is reset only if the profile carries the organisation-owned mark. Otherwise only the work profile is wiped.

## The inactivity timer

A policy sets the inactivity timer in days. A handset nobody has unlocked for that long removes the work profile itself – no command, no network.

The term counts from the last unlock, by any method.

While work apps are paused, unlocks are not counted. A profile resumed after the term is up is removed at once.

While the timer is set, a [geofence](https://docs.wyrd.link/en/features/geofence/) applies or a SaaS license term runs, the phone's date and time are set automatically only. This needs the organisation-owned mark on the profile.

Zero days switches the timer off.

## Where the device is

The phone's owner turns position reporting on. What the handset needs for it is described on the [Location](https://docs.wyrd.link/en/features/geolocation/) page.
