# Which handsets are suitable

Answers the question: Why not any phone, and what to look at when buying?

## Models

Google Pixel handsets of the eighth, ninth and tenth generation are suitable. Their chip carries hardware memory tagging and the manufacturer gives seven years of updates instead of five. Older handsets lose updates halfway through the fleet's life.

GrapheneOS does not support the eleventh generation: its hardware memory tagging is switched off in firmware. The project keeps the list of supported handsets on its [Frequently Asked Questions](https://grapheneos.org/faq#supported-devices) page.

## Memory

If the handset is in daily use with a personal profile and a private space besides the work profile, we recommend a model with more than 8 GB of RAM. With all three profiles running, 8 GB occasionally makes the interface stutter.

## What to avoid

**Carrier versions are not suitable.** No other system can be installed on handsets sold by mobile operators. You need ordinary global versions.

**Folding models are not recommended.** They are supported, but unfolding brings its own faults: from uneven backlight across the halves to a lost mobile connection.

## Second-hand handsets

Second-hand handsets are suitable. Before buying, check that the handset did not come from a mobile operator.
