Geofence

Answers the question How do you limit where a work phone may be?

A geofence locks the phone or wipes the work profile when the phone is somewhere it may not be. The phone watches its zones itself, offline too.

Zones

Zones are drawn on the map in the Zones section of the console: a name, a type, the action on violation and an outline of 3 to 256 vertices. The "Find a place" field moves the map to a town by name. The search runs against a gazetteer inside the server; the query does not leave the server.

The action on violation is Lock of the phone or Wipe of the work profile. When several zones are violated, the strictest action is taken. A geofence wipe follows the phone owner's "Reset the phone with the profile" switch, as the wipe command does. The switch is described on the A lost device page.

One zone is assigned to many devices and groups.

Switching it on

A device's geofence is switched on in its page, the Geofence block: tick the zones and turn the switch on.

In the Groups section a group has its own zones and its own geofence switch. The group's geofence applies to members without a geofence of their own. A device's own geofence takes precedence.

A geofence applies while the phone's owner reports their position. The procedure is on the Location page. Until then the device page shows "Set, not applied", afterwards "Active".

On the phone

While a geofence applies, the reporting switch on the phone is locked. The owner can turn reporting off again once the administrator switches the geofence off.

If one of the conditions for reporting position goes away meanwhile, the phone warns its owner. If the condition is not back by the next check, the work profile is wiped. The zones' actions and the no-position term play no part here.

The phone checks its position against the zones as soon as it receives the rules, then every 5–15 minutes and after every fix. Instead of a fix older than 20 minutes, it asks for a new one. After a restart the phone starts watching its zones from the first unlock.

Before a wipe the phone reports the reason to the server, if it has a connection. The server records it under Alerts.

The Geofence screen in the app shows the zones on a map, the action of each and the current position.

Position unknown

The policy field "Minutes without a position before a geofence violation" sets how long a phone under a geofence may go without knowing its position. The term counts from the last fix, but no earlier than the phone received the geofence or a new value of the field. When the time runs out, the phone asks for its position again. If that fails too, it takes the strictest action among its zones. 0 switches the check off.

A pause of work apps longer than the term and longer than half an hour also counts as time without a position. After the pause the phone takes the strictest action, even if it is inside a zone by then. Time with the phone switched off does not count.
