A lost device

Answers the question What do you do in the first minutes after a phone goes missing?

The order of things

1. Find the device in the dashboard by the employee's name.
2. Lock it.
3. If it is not expected back, wipe the work profile.

Only the work half is erased: the employee's photographs, messages and accounts are untouched, regardless of who paid for the handset.

Commands are queued and reach the phone as soon as it connects. A handset that is switched off does not cancel a command – it waits.

Where the device is

Finding a device is switched on by the owner of the phone. It is a separate permission, given deliberately and revocable: without it no coordinates are collected and none are shown to the administrator.

Once permission is given, coordinates reach the server on a command from the dashboard rather than as a stream.

The point is drawn on a map. The server downloads it over an anonymity network, so we can see neither who is looking nor where; viewed areas stay in its cache.

What the system will not do

The system will not stop a person from dictating the contents of a message or handing over an unlocked phone: it lowers the risk of loss and theft, but does not replace the rules for handling information.
